Project Summary: The project will be undertaken to create an extensive database on imported timber in the SITCZ involving species, quantity/value marketed, form of wood, supporting documentation etc., and secondly, to underline the parameters responsible to promote the timber import & re-export in the SITCZ.

Description of services within the assignment :-

  • To create a database, related to net international import of each type of raw material procured by the wood based industrial units in SITCZ.
  • To establish the factors contributing to the import of timber in India based on parameters such as industries, substitution of native species, domestic demand patterns, taxes, seasonal variations, etc.
  • To understand the forest footprint of this imported timber to India with specific interest in the species, form of wood, quantity, unit cost, exporting regions, certifications, supporting documents, etc.
  • To understand the policy imperatives of timber import, from certified sources, to reduce the sourcing from high conservation value forests of the world’s critical eco-regions like Amazon, Congo, etc.
  • To understand the utilization capacity of different kinds of wood based industries within India, based on their Industrial requirements, regional clusters, etc..
  • To understand the role of Indian regulations and International commitments in regulating the timber import industry.
